Revelation 9 (ESV)
9 And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit. 2 He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft. 3 Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth. 4 They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any green plant or any tree, but only those people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5 They were allowed to torment them for five months, but not to kill them, and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings someone. 6 And in those days people will seek death and will not find it. They will long to die, but death will flee from them.

Notice that as the fifth angel blew it's trumpet, the text does not say I saw a star fall from heaven, but it says I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth.  This star has already fallen and the star represents the devil.  The star fell from heaven when Satan was kicked out.  So this star is a star that fell a long time ago.  Also notice that he did not have the key to unlock the abyss, but it was given to him.  The devil is not in control, but under God’s control.  Thinking back to the Old Testament, the Devil was not able to do whatever he wanted to Job, but had to ask permission.  All these signs going on are signaling that the Last Day is coming, but they are but birth pains, the baby is not here yet (so to say).  As judgement day nears, Satan will be set free for a short time.  When the gates are opened up, out come the locusts which are the devil’s fallen angels.  They have been let loose.  God is still in control, but gives them limited authority.  They are limited from harming the natural earth (or nature), but only people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.  They are allowed to torment them, but not kill them.  The seal of God represents the “elect”, that is the believers of God.  So they cannot bother the Christians, but only the nonbelievers and they are limited to only tormenting them.  It is God who has the authority to kill, not Satan.  They are also limited to five months.  While this time that we have been reading about the last several days seems extremely scarey, it is hard to see without reading the Scriptures, but God is in control.  We will see more in tomorrow’s reading.  I pray: Lord, help me to realize that when times seem really, really bad, to understand and to know that you are still in control.  Lord, let me let you be my guide instead of thinking I can handle it.  Lord, protect me and guide me, and continue to pick me up and dust me off through your forgiveness and guidance.  Amen.
