Revelation 7:1–8 (ESV)
The 144,000 of Israel Sealed
7 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree. 2 Then I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea, 3 saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.” 4 And I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel:

5     12,000 from the tribe of Judah were sealed,
12,000 from the tribe of Reuben,
12,000 from the tribe of Gad,
6     12,000 from the tribe of Asher,
12,000 from the tribe of Naphtali,
12,000 from the tribe of Manasseh,
7     12,000 from the tribe of Simeon,
12,000 from the tribe of Levi,
12,000 from the tribe of Issachar,
8     12,000 from the tribe of Zebulun,
12,000 from the tribe of Joseph,
12,000 from the tribe of Benjamin were sealed.

Almost everyone has heard of this 144,000 in Revelations and are often concerned whether or not they are part of the 144,000.  The answer is maybe!  Some try to take this number literally and in that case, no you are not part of the 144,000.  That number was probably reached 1,900 years ago.  You don’t have a shot in a blue moon.  But I disagree with taking this number literally and I have good reason to disagree.  This number should be taken symbolically as many things in the Book of Revelation.  We tend to think of Israel as a country overseas and this is true.  Biblically speaking Israel is the name of God’s Children and can also be used as the body of believers (God’s Children).  So we believe that the 144,000 represents all the belivers on earth, which makes you a part of the 144,000.  Do you think I’m wrong?  Well look at the very next verse which is part of tomorrows reading.  It states: Revelation 7:9 (ESV) “9 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands...”  This is the very next verse which is showing a great multitude that no one could number.  Well I can count to 144,000 and that is not too difficult, although it will take me awhile, but I could do it.  I could do it in two days counting 1 person per second with no sleep.  If I sleep, it will take three days.  But the text says that it is a great multitude that no one could number!  Well, that’s way past 144,000!  And if you interpret Israel as the nation Israel, the text says a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the lamb.  Israel is only one nation, but the text says “every nation” which would include Jews and Gentiles.  So the 144,000 is not literal and it is not the nation Israel, but the body of believers, both Jews and Gentiles and is a number way more than 144,000 which can be counted, but a number so great that “no one could number.”  Are you part of the 144,000?  If you are a believer in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, then it is a BIG YES!
I pray: Lord, I give thanks that you have included me in the Lambs Book of Life and that I am a Child of God.  Help me to study your Word and grow in faith, and to continue to repent of my sins.  Help me to live in my baptismal grace that you have given me.  Lord, teach me to be bold and to share my faith with others.  Amen.
