Revelation 4:1–6 (ESV)
The Throne in Heaven
4 After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” 2 At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. 3 And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald. 4 Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, clothed in white garments, with golden crowns on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God, 6 and before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal.

It is interesting that the use of a “door” is used in Letter 6 (Philadelphia), Letter 7 (Laodicea), and is used in today’s reading which is immediately after Letter 7 where Jesus is knocking at the door.  Now we find the door open and John, along with us, get a glimpse of the throne in Heaven.  Jesus calls to John: “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.”  For some reason, I see the owner of a circus lifting up the edge of the tent for a little boy to look in and get a glimpse of the three rings under the Big Top.  The boy drops his popcorn and stands in awe as he sees the circus at work, amazed with his mouth hanging wide open.  John is not looking under a tent into a circus, he is looking into the great throne room... far greater that any circus... or anything that man could dream up.  I simply cannot add to what John is seeing, so I simply use his words... as he stands probably with his mouth hanging open.  “A throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God, 6 and before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal.”  The twenty four thrones around the one throne represents the Old Testament 12 tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles of the New Testament.  I will stop here because I there is a lot to be said about what happens next.  Don’t miss tomorrow!  I pray, Lord, I thank you for giving John a glimpse of Heaven through this vision.  I look forward to the day I too we see you on your throne, face to face.  I get excited just reading about this vision.  Lord, help me to keep my eyes focused on you and to Lord, help me to continue in my excitement or you and what you have done for me.  Amen.
