Revelation 1:17–20 (ESV)
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right
hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. 19 Write therefore the things that you have seen, those that are and those that are
to take place after this. 20 As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
Two days ago in the readings, John had a voice speaking to him from behind. Yesterday’s reading... John turns around and see Jesus! I had asked you what your response would be if you turned around and were face to
face with Jesus? The bright face, white hair, and eyes of fire... How would I react? Well, I can tell you how John reacted. “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead.” To be standing next to God, who knows
all things, who knows me better than I know myself. I think I would be scared and sick at my stomach. To know that he has been aware of all my sins. I too, would fall at his feet as though dead. Just to be in His almighty presence is enough
to make me fall.
What we would not be counting on is what happens next. Jesus “laid his right hand on me, saying, Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and
behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.” Jesus shows his love and compassion with the touch of His hands the His spoken voice “Fear not”. There is a lot of Theology in these two words.
First of all, He is trying to not scare you, because He loves you. If you have fallen down because you know who you are and what you have done, He again says “fear not!” You see, when we repent of our sins to God, He forgives
us of our sins and remembers them no more. We need to “fear not!” There is another reason we fall to the ground, and this is through worshiping Him. In Heaven there will be a lot of worshiping of our Lord as seen in Rev Revelation
19:4 “And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who was seated on the throne, saying, ‘Amen. Hallelujah!’”
Jesus also said he is the
first and the last, and the living one. The first and the last, he was at the creation of the world and he will be there for the destruction. He is the living one because they killed him by crucifying him on a cross, yet he rose from the dead and
is still alive today and gives eternal life to all who repent and believe in Him. We are part of living one because of our faith and we share in His resurrection. Because God the Father raised up Jesus from death, we too will be raised up through
I especially like the next part that states “I have the keys of Death and Hades." Jesus is about life, not death, yet unfortunately, those who reject him... hey... Jesus is the Key
Master and He has the Keys to death and Hades. My advocate on Judgement day is not someone who knows the Judge, my advocate IS THE JUDGE!
Yesterday I said the Seven Stars are the seven angels watching over the
seven lampstands which are the seven churches. I know I’m right, not that I am that smart, but it is the scriptures that reveals this mystery. Revelation 12:20 states: “As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right
hand, and the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.” Seven letters are about to be sent out, one to each church. The content of these letters are extremely
important and show us the purpose of this Revelation. We will see the first letter tomorrow. Oh, I can’t wait... but I’ll have to be patient. As many of you know, I enjoy picking locks as a hobby. I wonder what kind of key
is used for Death and Hades. I would like to see it, but I have no desire to pick THAT lock. I pray: Lord we know that Death and Hades are very real. Help us to not keep Jesus private, but to
proclaim his love and compassion and his gifts of forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life. Amen!
