Written by John
In line with 1 John, this letter is warning to beware of false teachers and do not have fellowship with them. John is telling Christians in the church to be careful who comes into the church.
Theme: 2 John 10–11 (ESV)
10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11 for whoever greets him takes
part in his wicked works.
2 John 1–3 (ESV)
1 The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who know the truth, 2 because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever:
3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father’s Son, in truth and love.
This is a traditional greeting in the early church writing style.
The “elder” is the Apostle John who wrote this letter. The “elect lady” is a particular congregation. The church is always referred to as “she” or a “woman” because Jesus is the
bridegroom. The bride (the church) belongs to the bridegroom (Jesus Christ). The words “her children” refers to the fellow believers in Christ. It is important to note that within a congregation, there may be those who
do not believe or instruments of Satan. The word “children” is referring to only the true believers. True believers are members of the Church Triumphant. It is God who knows who is who. This letter is telling the
church (possibly a house church) to be careful who comes and influences the children by false doctrine. Notice that the “children” are “whom I (Jesus) love in truth, and not only I, but also all who know the truth.”
When you think of the truth, think of Jesus. Jesus himself said “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6 (ESV) I often hear people and even pastors who say they don’t care
about doctrine, but this is exactly what John is warning us about. This was a problem in John’s days and it is a big problem for the church today. I pray: Lord, help me to search the scriptures to know the truth. Satan twists
the truth in very subtle ways, and he is the father of all lies. Lord protect us and abide in us and help us to not be lead astray. Amen.
