1 John 5:1–5 (ESV)
Overcoming the World
5 Everyone who
believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that
we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes
that Jesus is the Son of God?
First of all, happy birthday to my Mom, who will never, ever see this. I’ll have to tell her in person. (Now back to the devotion)
The world has a lot of influence on us, more than we will ever know. As a Christian, we see things going on around us that are not God pleasing. I find it odd that so much is going on in the headlines today, and
I literally mean today, with President O’Bama giving his speech on Gun Control yesterday, that this is all a knee-jerk reaction to the shootings in Sandy Hook Elementary and nothing is being said about the thousands of babies being aborted each week.
Don’t get me wrong, Sandy Hook was a tragedy, but it is so minor compared to the killing of babies through abortion. Yet I will catch flack from some people for even mentioning this. Let’s look at verse 2-3, “2 By this we
know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.” In the Lutheran Church, The Fifth Commandment is Thou
Shall not Murder. I say in the Lutheran Church because not all churches have the same numbering system on the 10 Commandments, yet we all agree on the 10 Commandments no matter how they are numbered.
Christians will really go out of the way to justify their sins. Sin is wrong until it hits home. Such is the case with teenage pregnancy and abortion. If you find yourself telling your pregnant daughter that abortion is ok, you can always
have more, or that it’s all right because you are so young... well you have fallen into the ways of the world. The Bible says it is not ok. The world cries out “Hey, It’s my body!” But doesn’t that same
saying also apply to the baby? The world is justifying abortion as acceptable behavior while God says “NO!” This is only one area that the world is going against God in the name of Political Correctness or personal convenience. If you are arguing against me, how do you argue against “Thou shall not commit murder!” I know that this is not a popular stance. I have been reminded that there are things that we shouldn't talk about
in church. Well, as a spiritual leader, I must remind people. Not many people liked the message of the prophets. Just remember, Jesus didn't come to condemn the world, but to save it!
fall short, and we are sinners too. We are not better than anyone else, just forgiven. It is God who forgives us. Anyone who has had an abortion, I want to tell you how God does care about you and his love for you. To those who repent
of their sins, God does forgive. I really mean this! Some of God’s greatest spokesmen had taken the life of someone else: Moses, David, and Paul, to name a few. God forgave them all and used them to do his work. Whatever sin you
have committed, it not to big for God. Whatever you have done. Jesus died on the cross for ALL your sins. He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. I pray: Lord, I repent of all my sins and want to do better.
Renew a right spirit within me, help me to obey your commandments, not out of earning the right to go to heaven, but to obey them out of love because we have already been heaven. Help us not to point fingers at people, but point fingers to the Cross.
Jesus forgives! Amen.
