1 John 4:1–6 (ESV)

Test the Spirits
4 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. 4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

This is a really neat passage.  There are so many directions to go, I could sit here all day meditating on it.  No matter which verse catches your fancy, you can’t get away from v.1 “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”  How do you test them?  Do you make them walk a straight line... hold out their arms and touch their nose?  Do you give them a written or oral exam.  Do you make them pee in a cup, or draw blood and send it to a lab?  How do you test the spirits?  You test the spirits by their actions and words.  Do they profess their faith in Jesus Christ?  The Bible says in v.2 “2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God.”  I’m not sure that people understand how important this can be, to understand that we are to test the spirits.  Do you realize that there are good angels and bad angels.  Most Christians are not aware of this, but that is fitting because most Christians do not read the Bible.  If you notice that my Bible study does not jump around, but is a continual progression through the Scriptures.  I may jump around from book to book, but I don’t jump until I have finished a particular book.  When we read the Bible everyday, we are better equipped to test the spirits.  Here is a verse that shows why it is so important to “test” the spirits.  Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 11:14–15 “14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.”  Satan is trying to make himself look good and to appear righteous.  He wants to sound like the real thing, yet he is a deceiver and the father of all lies.  To not be deceived is to know Jesus Christ.  I read where the US Treasury agents study only real money.  If they truly know real money with all it’s details, then they can spot the fakes.  Sometimes we are more interested in studying fakes, but don’t have a good grasp on the real thing.  Jesus is the real thing.  “4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.”  I pray: "Lord, help me to hunger for your word, to seek it's guidance and wisdom more than any other book in this world.  Help me to be able to spot good spirit from an evil spirit.  Help me so that I'm not led astray.  Thank your for your forgiveness and salvation.  Amen.
