Luke 1:5–7 (ESV)
Birth of John the Baptist Foretold
5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 And
they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord. 7 But they had no child because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years.
Luke shares with us some background information on John the Baptist’s parents. His father, Zechariah, was a priest. His mother, Elizabeth, was from a priestly family from the daughters
of Aaron. This is a faithful family that walked in the ways of the Lord, but life was not perfect for them. They had no children. It was a family of two. We know that Elizabeth was barren … and old (advanced in years).
Being faithful does not mean that everything will be perfect and go your way. Life is full of troubles and trials. We all go through them. God promises to be with us as we go through these trials. Like Zechariah and Elizabeth, we are
to walk blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord. Little did they know that God was going to work through them, to bring the forerunner of Jesus Christ… John the Baptist. We do not know when or how God will work through
us, but he does.
I pray: O Lord, shape me according to Your Word and use me for Your Kingdom. Help me to walk in the faith you have given me.
Amen.
