Matthew 23:23–24 (ESV)
4Th of 7 Woes
23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without
neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!
Some Pharisees were so scrupulous about
tithing that they even gave 10 percent of their garden herbs. Compared to the Pharisees’ failure to keep the weightier portions of the moral law—the commands to act justly and mercifully toward others—their painstaking tithing of garden produce
is absurd.
I pray: Help me to give with a joyful heart and as an outpouring of my love for what you have done for me. Amen.
