Matthew 3:4–6 (ESV)
John the Baptist Prepares the Way
4Now John wore a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were
going out to him, 6and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
I always look at this passage as
the latest in fashion trends. So… why do they describe his attire of camel’s hair and a leather belt. This is not normal attire, but it is what prophets wore. They are hearing about John the prophet, they expect to see him dressed
like a prophet. What was more important is not what he was wearing, but what he was doing. He was calling for the people to “repent” and they came “confessing their sins” and being baptized. John is doing what he is
supposed to do!
I pray: O Lord, help me to tell others about Jesus and what he has done for me and for the world. Amen.
