Matthew 3:1–3 (ESV)

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

3[1]In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” 3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.’ ”

John’s last name is not “the Baptist.”  He is the son of the Zechariah, a priest.  Zechariah is married to Mary’s relative… Mary (the mother of Jesus).  This should make John a cousin of Jesus.  Both John and Jesus are the fulfillment of prophecy.  I prefer to call him John the Baptizer which is scriptural as well.  The purpose of John is to “prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.”  He is preparing the people by telling them to “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”  I think of John as a circus barker trying to get people to come and see or hear.  Of course, John’s message is not about a circus, but of Jesus Christ, the Messiah!

I pray: O Lord, our message to share is not about a circus, but about the kingdom of God.  Help us to Repent that we are sinners and in need of a Savior.  Amen.
