1 John 5:13–15 (ESV)
That
You May Know
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have
eternal life. 14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know
that we have the requests that we have asked of him.
There are many
verses in the Bible that state if you ask anything in the name of the Lord, He will grant it. I have asked for a million dollars many times and have never received it. Today’s reading adds “according to his will”. That is
his will, not our will! This is why I have not received the million dollars. It is not according to his will. In fact, this is part of the Lord’s prayer “Thy will be done”, not “My will be done.”
I pray: O
Lord, too often I ask for things that are not part of your will, yet in the same prayer as “give us this day our daily bread.” Help me to trust and to live by your provisions instead of my wishes. You know my needs better than I do
and you know my wants which are not always best for me. Thank you for all you do for me. Amen.
