Hebrews 7:15–19 (ESV)
Jesus
Compared to Melchizedek
15 This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek,
16 who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life. 17 For it is witnessed of him,
“You are a priest forever,
after the order
of Melchizedek.”
18 For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness
19 (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.
Today’s passage continues to compare Jesus to Melchizedek. Verse 18 brings back studying Walther’s “Law and Gospel”. The Law is good, but
instead of saving us, it condemns us. It shows us our sins. It makes us realize that we need a Savior. That is Jesus Christ who is a better hope, he is our Savior who saves us from the law. Jesus comes in the form of Melchizedek.
I pray: O Lord, the old system of the law condemns us and we see that we fall
short. Thank you for Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. You are our new hope. Amen.
