Matthew 20:17–19 (ESV)
Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time
17 And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, 18 “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son
of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death 19 and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.”
Jesus prophesies for a third time that he will die and rise again on the third day. This is not one prediction that was told three times in Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
These are three predictions that are all in the book of Matthew. Not only does he predict his death by crucifixion, but he nails down who will carry out his death. Jesus will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn
him to death. He even accurately adds that he will be handed over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and flogged. What is even more interesting is that “they” will carry out His prophecy for Him. It is amazing to see all this carried
out as Jesus predicted. Another testimony to his Lordship.
I pray: O Lord, it is so easy to overlook your mighty miracles and your many prophecies.
The world is turning against you when we should be turning to you. Forgive me and help me to keep my eyes focused on you. Amen.
