Matthew 18:7–9 (ESV)
Temptations to Sin
to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes! 8 And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter
life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into
the hell of fire.
Many people don’t worry about sin. Some trivialize it. But here in today’s reading, Jesus makes a big issue out of sinning.
He takes a serious stand in saying if your hand, foot, or eye causes you to sin… cut it off or cut it out. Don’t let anything come between you and God… especially sin. Now is Jesus actually suggesting that we caught off our
hand, foot, or eye? Perhaps… but I think what is really being said is to stop sinning. A blind man can still envision pornography. You can still sin with or without your hands and/or feet. Sin is a heart issue. So
Jesus is wanting us to repent and stop sinning.
I pray: Dear Lord, I confess my sins of thought and word and deeds and want to do better.
Help me in my daily walk and to keep my eyes focused on you. Amen.
