Matthew 5:31–32 (ESV)
Divorce
31 “It
was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her
commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Jesus was teaching about adultery and lust in yesterday’s reading. Today,
he speaks to us about divorce. Today, people get divorce for just about any reason they choose. It is sad how divorce has permeated into the church today. About 50% of marriages end in divorce… whether Christians or unbelievers.
Today, people want to test drive a marriage by living together before they get married. Some have no desire to make any marriage commitment. Yet the bible speaks against premarital sex. In the book of Hebrews, we read: 13:4 “Let marriage
be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.” We also see Jesus that remarrying someone else is committing adultery.
I pray: O Lord, I know the world is turning away from Your ways, and we especially see this in Your gift of marriage. Help me to keep my eyes focused on you, and to fight for my marriage instead of fighting against
it. Bless my marriage. Amen.
