Matthew 5:4–6 (ESV)
are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Today, we have the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th beatitude.
When we hear “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted,” we think of mourning for someone who has died. This is not what is meant, but Blessed are those who mourn over their sins… their own personal sins, for they shall
be comforted. Jesus love and forgiveness brings comfort to us.
Blessed are the meek. I think of driving a Ferrari 35 miles per hour instead of letting the beast run. It is opposite of out of control.
It is restrained and disciplined power. So those who withhold or restrain from exercising their power… will inherit the earth.
When we hear “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst”…
we think of the poor and hungry. But this is not a hunger for food, but a hunger and thirst for righteousness… for doing what is right and God pleasing. I remember when I read through the Bible for the first time, I hungered for God’s
Word and wanted to keep on studying it. I still hunger for his Word and hope that you do too.
I pray: O Lord, shape me and mold me according to Your
will, not mine. Amen.
