Matthew 4:8–11 (ESV)
The Temptation of Jesus
the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then
Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,
“ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only
shall you serve.’ ”
11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
In today’s reading, we have the third temptation. The devil takes him to the top of a high mountain and shows him “all the kingdoms” of the world. I remember all the cities I could see from the
top of Pike’s Peak. The big question is this… “Who created the world?” God did, not the devil. So… who is in charge or who owns everything? God… not the devil. So how can the devil
offer all these kingdoms to Jesus if he falls and worships the devil. It is interesting that at the Second Coming, “every knee will bow and every tongue confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord.” So… who will be worshipping who?
I pray: O Lord, I know at times I take my eyes off you. Forgive me and help me to stay focused on you. The Creator of the world. And the owner!
