Matthew 4:5–7 (ESV)
The Temptation of Christ
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,
“ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’
and
“ ‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ”
7 Jesus
said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”
This is temptation #2. The devil
is trying to force Jesus to call God into action. He takes him to the highest point of the temple and tells him to jump! Well… at least he says “throw yourself down.” The devil is quoting the verse “He will command
his angels concerning you” and is expecting to force God into action and that would put him controlling God. Yet Jesus quotes back “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.” This temptation fails… 2 down!
I pray: O Lord, I plead guilty at times to putting you to test. Forgive me and help me to serve Your will over my will. Amen.
