Genesis 38:1–5 (ESV)
Judah and Tamar
38 It
happened at that time that Judah went down from his brothers and turned aside to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah. 2 There Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua. He took
her and went in to her, 3 and she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er. 4 She conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name Onan.
5 Yet again she bore a son, and she called his name Shelah. Judah was in Chezib when she bore him.
Ok, this does not sound romantic. In fact, it sounds like something from The Clan and the Cave Bear. Maybe there was some romancing going on, but this is blunt, quick, and to the point. We don’t
know if “He took her” is equivalent to marriage, but that is how it is worded. It doesn’t mean they were not married, but it is a bit vague. I just shake my head. What we do possibly see is that Judah got along with the
people in his area.
I pray: O Lord, help me to walk according to your ways, trusting in the saving faith you have given me. Amen.
