Genesis 31:33–35 (ESV)
Jacob Flees from Laban
33 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent and into Leah’s tent and into the tent of the two female servants, but he did not find them. And he went out of Leah’s tent and entered Rachel’s.
34 Now Rachel had taken the household gods and put them in the camel’s saddle and sat on them. Laban felt all about the tent, but did not find them. 35 And
she said to her father, “Let not my lord be angry that I cannot rise before you, for the way of women is upon me.” So he searched but did not find the household gods.
I think it is safe to speculate that Laban first thinks Jacob stole the household gods because he searched his tent first. Second he searches his daughter Leah’s tent.
Perhaps there were some trust issues between Leah and her father. He then goes to the next suspects tent… the tent with two female servants. He then searches Rachel’s tent. But she has removed them and hid them in
a camel’s saddle and then she sits on that saddle. She basically says to her father, I can’t get up from the saddle because it is that time of month. It seems that Rachel continues her deception and hides the fact that she has stolen
the household gods. My, what a tangled web we weave!
I pray: O Lord, help me to tell the truth at all times. Help me to not deceive people
but to be known as a person of integrity. Forgive me when I fall short. Amen.
