Genesis 19:23–29 (ESV)

God Destroys Sodom

23 The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar. 24 Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven. 25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 26 But Lot’s wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

27 And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord. 28 And he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the valley, and he looked and, behold, the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace.

29 So it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the valley, God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow when he overthrew the cities in which Lot had lived.

We see that God did destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because of their sinful lifestyle.  Sympathetic Lot had to be led out of the city by the two angels.  Lot’s wife disregarded the warning to not look back and became a pillar of salt.  It also shows us that Abraham negotiated nothing from God, other than rescuing Lot and his family.  God said he would destroy the cities and he did.  God already knew the sinfulness of the cities and their hearts.  I have heard recently some people demanding that God apologize for destroying Sodom and Gomorrah.  Well… God is God… and his Word stands.  God wants all of us to repent of our sins and to turn away from them.  We need to take heed and learn from these two cities and turn away from sin.  God loves you so much that he sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to carry out the plan of salvation.  Through his virgin birth, perfect life, death, and resurrection… we have been set free.  Many refuse this gift of salvation, but to those who embrace it… we have forgiveness, eternal life, and heaven itself.

I pray: O Lord, help me to see my sins and to turn away from them.  I know that going to heaven is not based on my actions, but on the faith you have given me through your Son’s actions.  It is through Faith Alone, that we are save.  Thank you for this precious gift.  Amen.
