Genesis 8:20–22 (ESV)
God’s Covenant with Noah
20 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21 And
when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I
have done. 22 While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.”
Anyone who really knows me knows that I love BBQ and it is a hobby and passion to smoke meats. My family loves eating BBQ and I love cooking it. Now… for a little
education that is not found in the Bible. BBQ is smoking meat at a low temperature over a long time period. I usually smoke my briskets at 225 degrees for about 14 hours. That is low and slow! Many confuse cooking hamburgers and hot
dogs as BBQ. If you are cooking over a higher heat and cooking food in about 10 -20 minutes… that is not BBQ, but grilling. I laugh at today’s reading because it shows me that God loves the smell of smoked meat! Noah must have
been from Texas because he first built an altar and then held a BBQ. Well… not really a BBQ, but he offered clean animals for a sacrifice and “the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma.” It is interesting that Noah offers burnt offerings
and they have not been introduced yet in the Bible.
I pray: O Lord, I know you love the smell of BBQ, but in a more serious note… you are a loving
and forgiving God. I give thanks to your grace and mercy. Amen.
