Genesis 3:17–19 (ESV)
The Fall (Part 6 – Adam’s Punishment)
17 And to Adam he said,
“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
and have eaten of the tree
of which I commanded you,
‘You shall not
eat of it,’
cursed is the ground because of you;
in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
and you shall eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your face
you shall eat bread,
till you return to the ground,
for out of it you were taken;
for you are dust,
and to dust you shall return.”
Adam’s punishment affects his daily routine.
God and place man in the Garden to work the ground. Now this daily activity becomes a chore. He will have pain and there will be thistles and thorns. I remember growing up on the ranch and going into the woods, I’m glad there were blue
jeans… because the thorns and briars would wrap around my legs and trip me. They even got me sometimes through the thick denim. Man will also sweat when he works. Working was not a toil, but now it is. This is man’s punishment.
And when we die, we return to dust.
I pray: O Lord, I look forward to the days when I am in heaven and I can run barefoot and not worry about grass burrs
and thorns. I look forward to working and not sweating. I look forward to not having to deal with pain. I repent and want to do better. I want to be in your kingdom. Amen.
