Genesis 3:1–3 (ESV)
The Fall
3 Now
the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.
He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the
tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”
I
want to point out one thing in today’s reading that is easy to miss. The woman adds words to what God had said. Let’s look at the dialog. “He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any
tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the
tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” What she added was “neither shall you touch it.” I figure that Adam probably added this to what he told Eve. I think back to
my mom telling me to put my hands in my pockets when I was in the china/glass department. She told me not to touch anything. The hands in the pocket was extra protection. I think Adam did the same thing with Eve, but told her to not to eat
it, and don’t even touch it. One simple rule… and it will be broken!
I pray: O Lord, we have sinned and fall short. If Eve would
have not eaten the forbidden fruit, I’m sure I would have. I repent of all my sins and want to do better. Amen.
