Genesis 2:18–25 (ESV)

The Creation of Man and Woman (Part 3)

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,

       “This at last is bone of my bones

and flesh of my flesh;

       she shall be called Woman,

because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

I remember when my kids were little and they would ask me questions like… Why is a dog called a dog and not a cat?   Why is a cow called a cow instead of a horse?   It is easy to dismiss these questions as foolishness… but I didn’t.  I gave them a biblical answer.  A dog is called a dog because Adam called it a dog.  Likewise, a cat is called a cat because of Adam.  A cow is called a cow and a horse is called a horse… because of Adam.  It says in verse 19 – 20: “ Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man[Adam] to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field.  So I would tell my kids… If you don’t like what an animal is called, then take it up with Adam… not me!  All the animals had a partner (a helper).  So God created a helper (woman) by forming her from one of Adam’s rib.  I remember Archie Bunker explaining to Edith that God made woman from a rib, a cheaper cut of meat.  While I think the joke is funny, I want you to know that ribs are one of my favorite type of meat to eat.  I LOVE ribs.  Archie missed the point.  The Lutheran Study Bible states: “God did not make Eve out of nothing or form her directly out of the dust of the ground. By making her from something taken from Adam, God both establishes their relationship within the order of creation and ensures that she will be a helper appropriate to Adam.”

God did a great thing in creating woman.  I love my wife (Lori) and I give thanks for her.  She is my better half!  I give thanks for her.

I pray: O Lord, I give thanks for creating me and especially for creating Lori for me.  Bless the marriages of a man and woman, and make them one.  In today’s world, marriage is getting confusing, but you did not create it that way.  Man did.  Help us to honor the institution of marriage between a man and a woman.  Amen.

Look at the Words say they "fell away". The had it, but lost it. Just like the Bible says your name can be blotted out of the Book of Life.
