Revelation 6:5–6 (ESV)
The Seven Seals (Part 3)
5When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living
creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a black horse! And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand. 6And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures, saying,
“A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm the oil and wine!”
The rider of the black horse brings famine. The scales in his hand are for weighing and buying
food by weight. The Lutheran Study Bibles states: “Ezekiel had warned that the Babylonians would destroy Jerusalem’s food supply and then the Israelites would “eat bread by weight and with anxiety, and … drink water by measure
and in dismay” (Ezk 4:16).
I pray: O Lord, help me to always trust you for my daily bread. You will provide all that I need. Help me to not confuse “needs” from “wants”. Amen.
