Revelation 4:6–8 (ESV)
The Throne in Heaven (Part 2)
6 and before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal.
And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures,
full of eyes in front and behind: 7 the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like an eagle in flight. 8 And
the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say,
“Holy, holy, holy, is
the Lord God Almighty,
who was and is and is to come!”
We see in today’s reading, that on each side
of the throne are the four living creatures. To be honest, this would scare me seriously… but I know to expect them. What are the four living creatures? Well they are described as: “full of eyes in front and behind: 7 the
first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like an eagle in flight. 8 And the four living creatures, each of them
with six wings, are full of eyes all around”. An artist could let his/her imagination fly with this description. These are angels, and probably more specifically… cherubim. They are described in Ezekiel1:4-28 and 10:1-8.
They are not new, but mentioned in Ezekiel. So, as a believer… expect them! Listen to what they are saying: “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” Notice that the glory is going to
God, not Satan or themselves. The Lord’s angels give glory to God.
I pray: O Lord, I echo the message of the angels “Holy, holy, holy, is the
Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” Amen.
