Revelation 4:1–6 (ESV)
The Throne in Heaven
this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” 2At
once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. 3And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the
appearance of an emerald. 4Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, clothed in white garments, with golden crowns on their heads. 5From
the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God, 6and before the throne there was as it were
a sea of glass, like crystal.
We get a glimpse of what John saw in the vision… the Heavenly Throne.
Jesus says to John “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” When I read this, I end up reading it two or three times. I am simply amazed at the beauty of John’s description. I think about taking
pictures on vacation of mountain scenes or waterfalls… and then when I look at them, the pictures don’t do justice. I wonder if John was describing it to the best of his ability, but is falling short because of his vocabulary. I am
amazed at his words, but he is probably thinking that his words don’t do justice to what he saw. What I do believe is that what John saw was truly beautiful and would leave us speechless. When he says “before the throne there was as
it were a sea of glass, like crystal,” I think of a reflecting pool that is doubling the beauty and glory of the Heavenly Throne.
I pray: O Lord,
I look forward to seeing your great Throne and all your Glory. Help me to stay focused on you and to remain strong in spite of persecution. Amen.
