Revelation 1:17–20 (ESV)
Vision of the Son of Man (Part 3)
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the
living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. 19 Write therefore the things that you have seen, those that are and those that are to take place after this.
20 As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
We see in today’s writing again that it is at Jesus’s feet that John falls down “as though dead.” But John hears Jesus say
“Fear not.” What a comfort. I can see myself falling prostrate on the ground and looking up as Jesus puts his right hand on me saying, Fear Not. Jesus refers to his resurrection “I died, and behold I am alive forevermore.”
Then Jesus defines what John is seeing. “As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.”
Jesus defined them, we don’t have to wonder or guess at their meaning… Jesus told us. The very reason that we are reading this is because John did in fact, write them down and distributed the letter to the seven churches.
I pray: O Lord, I love it when you define confusing things… because I need all the help I can get. I pray
for the Holy Spirit to guide us to understand your word and to not get distracted by things that are not in your word. Amen.
