Matthew 23:23–24 (ESV)

Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees (Woe #4)

23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!

What Jesus is condemning is their lack of compassion and love for others.   Let’s say there is a man in the church that is always giving his tithe (10%), yet he takes advantage of the poor, mistreats his co-workers, doesn’t help people in need.  This is what Jesus is condemning.  It’s not the tithing… it is in justice, mercy and faithfulness.

I pray: O Lord, help me to be faithful in both Law and Gospel, serving you and the community that I live in.  Help me to always walk according to your ways, putting my faith and hope in your grace and mercy.  Amen.
