Matthew 22:15–22 (ESV)
Paying Taxes to Caesar
the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. 16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and
you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18 But Jesus, aware
of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness
and inscription is this?” 21 They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 22 When
they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.
Well, it’s tax season, so that means we are all happy!!!! Well, maybe if you are
a CPA. Not many people like paying taxes. But taxes are useful in that they help fund police departments, fire departments, ambulances, libraries, roads, bridges, etc… I know someone who lives in a city that has no taxes and
they are proud of it. The roads are awful… full of potholes everywhere. Government is good for the sake of the people, but it can also become a monster. Trying to maintain a balance is the difficult part. It is interesting in
today’s war on drugs, some states have started issuing “stamps” for buying drugs. If you do not have the proper stamps, they can get you (of all things)… for tax evasion. Well they are going after Jesus and trying to get
him through tax evasion… so they set up a trap. They ask him “Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” Jesus saw through their plan and he tells them to “render to Caesar the things
that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” What is interesting is that most people pay their taxes, but don’t give to God. God only asks for 10%, well… the government keeps asking for more and
I pray: O Lord, you teach us to be subject to government and to you. Help me to be loyal to both, but when they conflict… to choose
your way. Amen.
