Matthew 21:18–22 (ESV)

Jesus Curses the Fig Tree

18 In the morning, as he was returning to the city, he became hungry. 19 And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” And the fig tree withered at once.

20 When the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither at once?” 21 And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. 22 And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”

There are a lot of people who call themselves Christians, but live a life that is anything but Christian.  This is what Jesus is talking about.  A fruit tree’s purpose is to produce fruit.  If it is not producing fruit, then it is a fruit tree in name only, but it is fruitless.  A Christian is someone who has faith (God given) and produces fruit because of that faith.  We are not saved by our fruit, but by our faith.  But if we are not producing fruit, then there is a problem with our faith.  We need not doubt, but trust in the faith that God has given us.

I pray: O Lord, help me to trust the faith you have given me and to produce works through love and gratitude through what you have done for me.  Amen.

"Depart in Peace" What a blessing when the world is so chaotic! Followers of Christ can find their peace in Him.
