Matthew 19:13–15 (ESV)

Let the Children Come to Me

13 Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, 14 but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” 15 And he laid his hands on them and went away.

After yesterday’s unpopular reading, Matthew follows the divorce passage with today’s on children.  We see here the love that Jesus had for the little children.  What we also see is the wrong attitude of Jesus’s disciples.  As an adult, it is often easy to see children and what they have to say as “getting in the way” of something much bigger and more important.  Jesus has a “stop and smell the roses” approach to the disciples.  The children ARE important.  How many times do we “hinder” children or adults?  How many times do we think that someone may or may not be interested in Jesus Christ?  How many times do we see ourselves as “above” someone else because of size, age, education, color, or income level.  We need to take a long look into the mirror and realize that all people, young and old, or whatever… are God’s creation.

I pray: O Lord, help me to not hinder anyone on the life journey.  Help me to be a guiding light pointing to Christ.  I repent for the times I have behaved like the disciples.  Forgive me and help me to change.  Amen.
