Matthew 13:34–35 (ESV)
Prophecy and Parables
34 All these things Jesus said to the crowds in parables; indeed, he said nothing to them without a parable. 35 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet:
“I will open my mouth in parables;
I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.”
Jesus is speaking in parables because “I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.” This is coming from Psalm 78:2.
Each parable is a story, but contains a golden nugget of hidden truth. The Lutheran Study Bible states: “Historians point out that simply knowing the facts about an event is not enough. One must interpret the facts correctly for proper understanding.
This is true with Jesus and the events of His life. We need the revelation that the Holy Spirit has provided in the Word of God to understand Jesus and put our faith in Him.”
I pray: Lord, draw near to me in Your Word, and open my heart to hear. Amen.
