Matthew 13:31–33 (ESV)
The Mustard Seed and the
Leaven
31 He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed
in his field. 32 It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”
33 He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.”
Our coming to faith may seem like a little thing or no big deal. We will come to appreciate this great gift. Faith is
like a light switch; you either have it or you don’t. A little faith saves just as much as a lot of faith. This parable is not about a little faith, or a lot of faith. It is about the kingdom of heaven and how great it is. The
seed grows, but it will NOT be fully appreciated or understood until we are in heaven. Our faith will grow as we study God’s Word.
I pray: O Lord, I give thanks for the precious gift of faith that you have given me. Help me to nourish this faith with your Word and Sacraments until we sit at the great wedding feast in heaven. Amen.
