Matthew 11:11–15 (ESV)

Messengers from John the Baptist (Part 3)

11 Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. 15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

I want to focus on verse 14.  John the Baptist and Jesus were both prophesied about and they both suffered violence.  But Malachi had prophesied that Elijah would return.  The book of Malachi states: 4:5 “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.”  So the Jews were expecting the return of Elijah which we see in John’s Gospel:

John 1:21–23 (ESV)

21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

So, even though John had said he is not Elijah, Jesus say’s in today’s reading “13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.”  So Jesus points out that John comes in the spirit of Elijah.  This is clarified in Luke’s Gospel:

Luke 1:17 (ESV)

17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”

I pray: O Lord, I trust in your Words and I am “willing to accept it, he [John] is Elijah who is to come.  I also trust that John the Baptist pointed to Jesus, as the One who is to come.  Amen.

Look at the Words say they "fell away". The had it, but lost it. Just like the Bible says your name can be blotted out of the Book of Life.
