Ask, and It Will Be Given
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For
everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know
how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
I have to be honest and say I don't like this passage because it is often
misunderstood. This makes it sound like I could ask for $1,000,000 and it will be given to me. So why not ask for $100,000,000 and we can make a huge donation to the church of $10,000,000. The church benefits and well... I benefit too! I
could reach out and help in ways that I never dreamed about. This fits in to the "name it and claim it" theology that promotes health, wealth, and prosperity. The problem is that you must take all of the scriptures together and put it into context.
God will give you what ever you ask for as long as it is His will and not yours. If we dictate to God what he is to give us, then we are putting ourselves above God and now we are telling God what he must do. WRONG!!! God will provide
according to His will. Remember in the Lord's Prayer, we pray "Thy will be done", not my will be done. It is a good verse if you measure it with the rest of the scriptures.
I pray:
O Lord, help me to trust in you to provide what I need and to withhold what I don't need. Not all that I ask for is beneficial, help me to be content with your providence. Amen.
