Matthew 3:11-12

John the Baptist Prepares the Way (Part 3)

“I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

Even though John comes baptizing,  he points to the one who is to come... that is Jesus.  He says "but after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry.  He will baptie you with the Holy Spirit and with fire."  He is pointing to Jesus as "the one".  Indeed, Jesus did baptize with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.  In essence, John also is pointing to the end times when he talks about the winnowing fork.  A farmer takes the winnowing fork at harvest time and tosses the wheat up in the air.  The heavier wheat falls straight back down, but the lighter chaff blows away.  The wheat (represents the Christians) is stored in the barn and the chaff (represents the unbelievers) is gathered and burned.  This is pointing to the Judgement day.

I pray: O Lord, I pray for your guidance and protection until the last day when you come and take me home.  Let me never be blown astray by the ways of the world.  Help me to share your saving Word with unbelievers and encourage the believers.  Amen.

Look at the Words say they "fell away". The had it, but lost it. Just like the Bible says your name can be blotted out of the Book of Life.
