Matthew 1:24-25

The Birth of Christ (Part 2)

"When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son.  And he callled his name Jesus."

I isolated these two verses because there is much to say.  How would you respond to your fiancee was pregnant with somebody else's baby?  Well, the angel of the Lord spoke to Joseph in a dream and Joseph responded to what the angel told him to do.  "He took his wife."  This speaks volumnes about Joesph's character and faith.  He heard the angel's word's and reponded!  Today, we have too many people that can hear or read God's Word (the Bible), yet they don't care what is says.  Joseph did care!  There is also the theology of Mary's perpetual virginity.  While I have many brothers in faith that support the pertetual virginity of Mary, I don't.  Verse 24 "he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son" speaks against the perpetual virginity of Mary.  "To Know" someone is a biblical way of saying to have sexual intercourse.  The way I read this (sorry for the bluntness)... Joseph did not have sex with Mary until after the child was born.  This would have brought to an end her virginity.  There is a lot more that could be said, but I choose to go no further.

I pray: O Lord, help me to listen and trust in your Words... and to follow your will.  Help me to choose your ways over my ways.  I repent of my sins, especially when I choose my ways over yours.  Amen.
