Matthew 1:18–23 (ESV)
The Birth of Jesus Christ
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19
And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to
take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us).
will admit that the genealogy in yesterday’s reading was not that exciting. I love genealogy, so I find it interesting, but we can’t just ignore that section. Today, we jump straight into the passages concerning the birth of Jesus.
What would you do if you found out the woman you are engaged to was pregnant with somebody else’s child? That would be a hard pill to swallow! Joseph can’t go through with it, so he makes plans: “being a just man and unwilling
to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.” He doesn’t announce it to the world, post it on facebook, or call her names. He does this quietly, not wanting to put her to shame. We can all learn from Joseph on how to
deal with others when we feel we have been wronged. But... an angel of the Lord intervenes through a dream and tells him “do not fear” and to take Mary as your wife. The angel of the Lord also tells him that “She will bear a son,
and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” This means that Jesus will be the promised Messiah! Joseph was obviously a man of faith. Infidelity in a valid reason for divorce, but when the angel tells
him to take Mary as his wife... he does! He doesn’t disregard God, but follows God.
I pray: O Lord, help me in dealing
with others to do so quietly and without putting them to shame. Help me to act as Joseph did and to follow your will. Amen.
