2 Peter 3:8–10 (ESV)
The Day of the Lord Will Come (Part 2)
But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish,
but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
Verse 8 is often misquoted or misunderstood. Many people state that one day is a thousand years. But that is not what it is saying. It says “that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years
and a thousand years as one day. It’s not 1 day = 1,000 years. God lives outside the constraints of time. We are linear thinking and live on a time line, but not so with the Lord. Time is irrelevant to God. This is why the
next verse says that “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise...” We live with time constraints, God doesn’t. The long time to us is nothing to God. We cannot fully understand living forever and ever in heaven, because
we are so wired for 70 - 100 years of life. Heaven is real and God’s plan of Salvation will take place on his schedule, not ours. We need to always be ready for his return, because he will come like a thief in the night. No thief that
I know lets you know when he will break in your house. No... we would be waiting on him! It is important that we keep our eyes focused on Jesus.
I pray: O Lord, help us to keep our eyes focused
on you and to not become complacent or to wander away. Help us to be ready and waiting for your promised return. Help us to share with others your plan of salvation. Amen.
