2 Peter 2:4–10 (ESV)
False Prophets and Teachers (Part 2)
For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others,
when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7 and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed
by the sensual conduct of the wicked 8 (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); 9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the
unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, 10 and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority.
Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme
the glorious ones,
One question that one can come up with in life is why would God rescue me or would he be able too? We see four “if’s” in this reading. We see a world that
has gone corrupt and God steps in. When the angels rebelled, God stepped in and cast them into hell. (Is hell real? Yes it is!) Before the flood in the days of Noah, the world had become corrupt. In the days of Noah, the Scripture says in Genesis 6:5-6 “The
Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.” God rescued mankind
through Noah. The third “if” is Sodom and Gomorrah. This is a city that was caught up in sexual sins, especially homosexuality. (Where did the term Sodomy come from?) Well, God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Today’s world has forgotten this
event and so have many church bodies. I have heard of a group today that is demanding that God apologize for Sodom and Gomorrah. Wow, what blind arrogance! Our world today is heading down the wrong road with such blind arrogance that even many Christians and
churches are getting led to astray. (Romans 1:26-27; 1 Cor 6:9; 1 Tim 1:10) In this day, everybody is hypersensitive to homosexuality and I want to make this point. I didn’t bring this up... I am simply going through the Bible and I’m not omitting
verses, but plowing through them.
I pray: O Lord, we live in a world today that corruption and sin are growing and people actually take pride in this. Like Lot, we are living in the midst of
sin and it is easy to become complacent to what is going on in our surroundings... and to even be swayed by the ways of the world. Help us to seek your Word and to stand firm in the faith. Amen.
