1 Peter 2:13–17 (ESV)
Submission to Authority
Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you
should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. 17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.
Today’s reading can rub a lot of Christians the wrong way. But, we must remember that the passage above IS God’s Word. We are not to twist it or omit it, but cherish it. It tells us to “13
Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good.” This means that we need to be subject to our
government. Well... that is what rubs a lot of Christians wrong. Our government is legalizing a lot of things that the Bible says is wrong. This does not mean we are to endorse these sinful changes, but at the same time... we must remember
that God is in control. Even when it seems the world is out of control. God will put up with evil only so long and then he steps in, much like when Jerusalem was destroyed.
I pray: O
Lord, help me to trust you even when our world is so against you. Help me to seek good when our world is seeking evil. Help me to be forgiving and loving, even when others hate me and persecute me. Help me to share your love. Amen.
