James 3:13–18 (ESV)
Wisdom from Above
13 Who is wise and understanding
among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly,
unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.
18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
There are two kinds of wisdom, earthly wisdom and heavenly wisdom. One comes from God and the other from man. The
world seeks earthly wisdom, but it is Godly wisdom that saves you. Godly wisdom is given to you from God. Without Godly wisdom, the Bible does not make sense. That is why the world is against Christianity, because it doesn’t make sense.
I have to admit, it sounds ridiculous that a man died 2,000 years ago on a cross and he forgave my sins. With Godly wisdom, through faith, we understand that the man Jesus, was actually God, and the cross was part of His plan of Salvation. It doesn’t
make sense without faith. But with faith, it does make sense. We can share the Gospel and plant the seeds of faith by telling others about Jesus, but we can’t save them. We can’t convince them. We can’t change them.
We can’t convert them. That job belongs to the Holy Spirit, who gives us faith and wisdom.
I pray: O Lord, help me to trust in heavenly wisdom and not put my trust in earthly wisdom. You are God
and your wisdom brings us salvation. You are the creator of all things, even man. Amen.
