Hebrews 11:17–19 (ESV)
Heroes of Faith
17 By faith Abraham,
when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, 18 of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 19 He considered that God was able even to raise him from
the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.
When you read the Old Testament account of Abraham offering Isaac for sacrifice, He was following what God told him. Now to be
frank about it, I could not have done this. If God told me to sacrifice my son, I would quote back to him the Fifth Commandment “You shall not murder.” I would have a problem going against God’s own Word. But today’s
reading gives us some insight into what Abraham was thinking. Verse 19, Abraham “considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.” We gain some great
insight as to how great of faith Abraham actually had.
I pray: O Lord, help me to learn from Abraham and to have full trusting faith. Help me to not doubt God you. Amen.
