Titus 1:1–4 (ESV)
Greeting
1 Paul, a servant
of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, 2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began 3 and at the proper time
manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior;
4 To Titus, my true child in a common faith:
Grace
and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
The greeting tells us several things. It tells us Paul wrote it. It is written to Titus, Paul’s friend and companion, who is
in the ministry. And it’s purpose is for the “sake of the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life.” There is a gem of a verse in this passage that I love
and use all the time: “God, who never lies.” I love this verse, because God is the author of Truth, whereas Satan is the Father of all lies. Truth is found in God! He does not deceive or lead you astray. I often use this
verse in reference to Scripture that people want to not believe... for instance... Genesis 1-11. People want to throw out the beginning of the Bible, yet the Bible is the Inspired Word of God. If he will lie to you about the beginning, then he
will lie to you about your salvation. The same goes for abortion, homosexuality, and in today’s news... gay marriage. The Supreme Court just plowed over God’s Word. This is not a good sign. But the government has been plowing
over God’s Word a lot.
I pray: O Lord, you are the Truth. Help us to focus our eyes on the Truth, and to not be swayed by the government and the ways of the world. Help us to dig deeper into
your word and let your Word be our guide. Forgive us and use us in carrying out your will. Amen.
