2 Timothy 1:1–7 (ESV)
Greeting
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus,
2 To Timothy, my beloved child:
Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Guard the Deposit Entrusted to You
3 I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. 4 As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Paul writes his second letter to Timothy and he mentions Timothy’s grandmother Lois and mother Eunice.  He also makes an obscure statement when he states in verse 3: “I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day.”  What does Paul mean when he includes “his ancestors” in he says “I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors”?  Paul was a persecutor of Christians!  So what gives with his ancestors?  Well, they lived in faith and served God.  They were looking forward to the coming of the Messiah.  Well, the Messiah came and Paul’s generation missed the boat!  The Jews killed the Messiah without understanding that Jesus was the Messiah.  So Paul’s ancestors had faith in God, just like Paul now has faith in God.  They were before the Messiah and Paul becomes saved after the death of the Messiah.  The Holy Spirit changed Paul’s heart and brought him into the right faith of God.

I pray: O Lord, help us to fan into flame the gift of God, to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ and let the Holy Spirit work in the seeds of faith planted.  It is not our job to convert people into Christians, but to plant the seeds of faith.  Lord, help us to plant seeds! Amen.

Look at the Words say they "fell away". The had it, but lost it. Just like the Bible says your name can be blotted out of the Book of Life.
