1 Timothy 6:11–16 (ESV)
Fight the Good Fight of Faith
11 But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the
good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free
from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom
no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.
I must stress that we are saved by faith alone, not by works. But at the same time, we are to “pursue righteousness,
godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.” I see couples today who are living together, individuals who repeatedly get drunk, addicted to drugs, alcohol, pornography, sex, and many other things. “But as for you, O Man of God,
flee these things.” In speaking about Christian living, we are all to live this way, but especially pastors. “To keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are
to realize that it is by His grace and mercy that we are saved, through the faith he gives us, but we are not to continue living as we had before. We are a new creation. The motivation is NOT so that we will get to heaven, but our motivation is
BECAUSE we are going to heaven.
I pray: O Lord, I give thanks that you have washed me clean and renewed me through your Word and the Holy Spirit. Thank you for giving me my faith. Help me
to flee sin and to seek your righteousness. Amen.
