1 Timothy 2:8–15 (ESV)
Pray for All People (Part 2)
8 I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; 9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves
in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. 11 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. 12 I do
not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if
they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.
Today’s text, I must admit, is not very popular among the women in the church. With that acknowledgment, we cannot neglect the
fact that this is in the Scripture. Too often, people want to rip out biblical text that they don’t like instead of embracing and honoring God’s Word. First of all, Paul is stating that women going to church should not be a fashion
show to see who can out dress whoever. Worshiping God is not a time of vanity, but a time of reverence and honor. The second part of this passage is to “Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach
or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.” This passage is a tough passage, that I quite honestly wish was not there... but it is! This is one of the text that prevents women from serving as pastors. Now many
churches have women pastors, but they ARE turning their backs to this and other passages. We must not ignore these Words. Instead of focusing on what women cannot do... I prefer to focus on what women CAN do! Women are the backbone to most
churches and can serve the Lord in so many ways. Women are invaluable to the church and the church would be in SERIOUS trouble without them. I must honor women, but at the same time, I must honor God’s Word. I cannot turn my back on
His Word. Please keep an open mind and focus on the Scripture as God’s Word. Paul does not let up on this issue.
I pray: Blessed Savior, as we gather in Your name for worship, give
voice to our prayers for all people. Lead us to delight in the roles and responsibilities You have so lovingly assigned us and to live out our vocations in submissiveness to You and to Your Word. Amen.
